Latex = The Natural Memory Foam

While it was first developed in 1966 by NASA, memory foam wasn’t used commercially for mattresses until the early 1980s. If you’ve ever slept on a foam mattress or topper, you’ve no doubt wondered how you ever managed to get a good night’s sleep before. For many the choice to get a replacement for your old mattress was quite simple but with natural latex mattresses available, it’s a much more difficult choice as to which of our products is best for your needs.

On a basic level, both foam and latex mattresses do exactly the same thing in enhancing night time comfort but latex works in a very different way. While both shape themselves to your body, latex not only spreads your weight evenly across the whole mattress but also gives you a lighter, more buoyant feeling support as it supports more of your body.

Getting the right support while you sleep – from the mattress right through to your pillows – is essential considering how much of our lives we spend in bed. The medical benefits of latex and memory foam beds (and combinations of foam or latex pillows and mattresses) have long been proven and they will assist in alleviating back pain and greatly reducing night time discomfort experienced by anyone who has arthritis, problems with their joints, or any other muscular-skeletal pains. It has also been said that they can also alleviate symptoms for those who have chronic fatigue syndrome.

One concern some people do have when it comes to traditional memory foam mattresses is that of heat. Some can retain heat more than normal mattresses, but latex is naturally breathable which allows for greater airflow in the mattress keeping them cooler and considerably better ventilated.

Because latex mattresses and pillows are made from naturally occurring sap from rubber trees, they are environmental friendly and can be made from sustainable sources, but as a trade-off they can be more expensive. However, despite their higher costs, latex mattresses are considerably more durable typically lasting twice as long as their memory foam counterparts with an average expected lifespan of around 20 years. Eventually, once the mattress has worn out, an added bonus of latex is that being completely natural, it is biodegradable so there will be no long lasting impact on the environment.

Being made from a rubber derivative, latex is also more water resistant as well making it ideal for those of you who love having breakfast in bed, or who want to let your children have snacks upstairs while watching television in their rooms without you having to worry about running the risk of spills ruining the mattress.

When it comes to health, both options for pillows, mattresses and toppers are hypoallergenic so they are ideal for anyone with asthma or other health problems, and are highly resistant to dust and while they provide support in different ways, the both types of our products offer equally high levels of comfort so which you choose there is really a matter of personal taste.
